Returning Unused Medications
Why do we need to safeguard antibiotics?
Within veterinary medicine, we are trying to limit the frequency and amount of antibiotics used. Each time an antimicrobial medication is used, it can lead to formation of resistance within the bacterial population. This can result in diseases becoming more difficult to treat, leading to poorer outcomes for our pets. Therefore, we aim to keep the use of these medications to a minimum, use alternative treatments when possible, and reach for antimicrobials only when they are truly necessary.
It is also important that when these medications are prescribed to follow instructions provided on dispensing labels precisely to ensure correct dosages and length of treatment. More information about antibiotic resistance can be found here: bit.ly/ENOVAT-videos
Returning unused medications to VSS
Pharmaceutical waste can be harmful to the environment and should be disposed of in an appropriate manner. VSS is happy to accept any veterinary medication that you no longer need. Just bring these in and hand them over to our reception staff. We will then dispose of these appropriately. Please note that the medication must be in its original packaging or have a prescription label attached.
