He returned to the Dick Vet in 1999 to undertake a residency in small animal surgery and was awarded his European College Diploma in 2003. He remained at the University Hospital for Small Animals, initially as a Lecturer and later as Senior Lecturer. John has helped train over 15 successful small animal specialist surgeons, who now work worldwide in both private practice and academic institutions.
John was head of the small animal surgery team at the University of Edinburgh for 15 years, until he left to join the VSS team in 2019. He is interested in all aspects of canine and feline orthopaedic disease, with a particular focus on the management of complex fractures. Outside work, John breeds and shows pedigree Hebridean sheep and shares the sofa with two Labradors who are useless at herding sheep.
