Vets show distance is just a number for charity mission

April 10, 2025

We have defied our geographical locations by teaming up with Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon, Essex, for a novel ‘Do The Distance’ challenge in support of Comic Relief.

Team members both north and south of the border proved our close allegiance by taking on the epic challenge of trying to run, walk or cycle a total of 401 miles – the exact distance between the two leading veterinary centres.

It was a phenomenal effort from both of our teams, and demonstrated that distance is clearly not a barrier to some impressive teamwork.

Penny Fraser, our operations manager, said: “It was a lot of fun and a real win-win situation. First and foremost, we’re delighted to be able to donate such a great amount to this year’s Comic Relief fundraiser.

“There is definitely a fantastic, feel-good factor in taking part and helping contribute to so many great causes and so many people in need.

“It’s also been a terrific, team-bonding experience at both VSS and Southfields – and, of course, between the two hospitals.

“We might be 401 miles apart but we stand side by side in our drive to be caring and compassionate centres for people and their pets within our respective communities.”

Kathryn Witney, operations assistant at Southfields, said: “Aiming to cover the 401 miles to Scotland definitely felt like a challenge but we wanted to really push ourselves.

“We had 23 members of our team contribute miles and we initially set out to cover the 401 miles distance to VSS from Southfields.

“However, we smashed through the target and actually ended up covering 483 miles, which would take us up to Dundee!

“It was great to be able to team up with another Linnaeus referral hospital in this way when we are so far away from each other and just shows the strong collaborative nature of the group.”
